Description:

Created in 1947, the Voice of Democracy (VOD) scholarship program is an audio-essay contest for high school students in grades 9-12 that annually provides more than $3 million in scholarships. The first-place winner, who competes with all the first-place VFW Department winners, receives a $30,000 scholarship that is paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school.

Allman Medical Scholarships – Miss America

Description:

Dr. David B. Allman was a past president of the Miss America Pageant and the American Medical Association. In memory of her husband, Mrs. Allman, during her lifetime, established a scholarship foundation to be administered by the Miss America Organization for the grant of scholarships to Miss America Pageant contestants who wished to enter the field of medicine to become medical doctors. At her death in 1981, Mrs. Allman further funded this foundation so that young women involved in the Pageant system could take advantage of this opportunity to further or commence their education in the medical field. Since 1974, Allman Scholarships have been granted to various Miss America contestants at the National, State and Local level.

The 2010 Sidney B. Williams, Jr. Intellectual Property Law School Scholarship

Sponsored by the American Intellectual Property Law Education Foundation, this scholarship addresses the need to increase the number of the minority intellectual property attorneys and to bring these attorneys to the attention of firms and corporations as candidates for employment. The $10,000 Law Scholarship will be awarded to minority students developing a career in intellectual property law or holding a past or present, full or part-time position in an area related to intellectual property law. Applicants must also have a demonstrated financial need and outstanding academic performance in the undergraduate level and law school level (if applicable).

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid isn’t technically a scholarship, but it is the largest source of free money available to college students every year and several states have April deadlines that come before the final federal deadline.  Students in Alaska, Deleware, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and West Virginia may be required to make sure all of their FAFSA forms are turned in by April – and regardless of what your state’s deadline is its a good idea to get this done as soon as possible.  The money is likely to run out before the final deadlines do.
